📜 Hispanic Heritage Month History

In June 1968, Congressman George E. Brown initiated Hispanic Heritage Month, originally as a one-week celebration. The recognition of Latino achievements gained momentum during the 1960s civil rights movement, as awareness of the diverse multicultural groups in the United States grew. Congressman Brown, representing Latinx and Hispanic-populated communities in the San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles, aimed to highlight the significant role these communities played in American history. President Lyndon B. Johnson established Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, which was later expanded to a 30-day commemoration by President Ronald Reagan, running from September 15 to October 15. This became law on August 17, 1988, through the passing of Public Law 100-402. September 15 was chosen as the starting date due to the independence days of El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras falling around that time, while Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18 respectively. Additionally, Columbus Day, also known as Dia de la Raza, occurs on October 12th. Hispanic Americans have made vital contributions to the success of the country, playing a significant role in its culture and economy.
