Major Richard Robert Wright, Sr., suggested this day as a national holiday. As a former slave, he persuaded Congress to set aside a day to commemorate all Americans’ freedom. President Harry S. Truman signed the Declaration of Independence into law in 1948. With conflict, turmoil, and worse in so many parts of the world, America’s long history of recognizing “freedom” makes living in America a once-in-a-lifetime chance and gift.

Celebrating our freedom is the ideal way to kick off a month dedicated to honoring the history and contributions of African Americans to our culture, country, and the world. We begin Black History Month on a joyful and thankful note, and we get to spend a whole month celebrating some incredible accomplishments. That pleases us; how about you?
