The Saint Paul Winter Carnival, held from January 26 to February 4 this year, makes January the coldest month in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Drawing inspiration from Canada, the people of Saint Paul showcase the excitement and enjoyment that can be found in a winter filled with ice. Considered the oldest winter event in the U.S., this carnival has been a tradition that has taken place nearly every year, with the exception of World War II.

πŸ“œ Saint Paul Winter Carnival History

According to mythology, Astraios and Eos, two gods, had five sons together. The eldest son, Boreas, was given the title of “King of the Winds.” Boreas eventually came across a beautiful place called Minnesota and decided to make it the capital of his entire kingdom. However, Vulcanus Rex, the god of fire and Boreas’s enemy, was not happy about this. He vowed to ruin Boreas’s celebrations. Undeterred, Boreas announced a festival in Saint Paul to honor winter. The festival lasted for ten days and featured various festivities and special guests like the Queen of Snows and a talented entertainer called Klondike Kate.

Throughout the year, volunteers dressed as characters from this myth visit different events, including festivals, nursing homes, schools, and hospitals, representing the Winter Carnival of Saint Paul and the city itself.

The Saint Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation is responsible for organizing this festival. A dedicated Board of Directors, along with numerous corporate and individual members, as well as hired personnel, work together to make the event a success. The festival relies on donations from individuals and businesses to fund its activities.
