📜 Statehood Day in Tennessee History

In December 1795, delegates were chosen for a constitutional convention and they gathered in Knoxville in January 1796 to create the state constitution. During this meeting, the name Tennessee was decided upon for the new state. In February, following the completion of the constitution, the Tennessee General Assembly, the state’s new legislature, was chosen. After the assembly convened in March 1796, John Sevier was appointed as the state’s first governor the next day. On June 1, 1796, Tennessee became the 16th state and the first to be established on federal land when it joined the Union.

Since then, Tennessee has undergone several changes. In 2002, a lottery was added to the state constitution. However, in 2006, the constitution was altered to prohibit same-sex unions. This amendment was struck down by the United States Supreme Court in 2015. Additionally, in December 2008, the largest industrial waste disaster in American history took place when over 1.1 billion gallons of coal ash slurry were accidentally released into the Emory and Clinch Rivers at the T.V.A.’s Kingston Fossil Plant. The cleanup efforts lasted until 2015 and cost over a billion dollars.
