The Night of Nights is an annual event that takes place on July 12 to commemorate the final commercial Morse code transmission in the United States. It is a celebration of the historical practice of sending messages via radio waves, primarily using Morse code.

📜 Night of Nights History

Tom Horsfall and Richard Dillman established the Maritime Radio Historical Society (M.R.H.S.) on the same day Morse code communication ended, with the aim of preserving the history of marine radio. They visited the K.P.H. stations in Point Reyes and Bolinas, which were surprisingly still functioning even though they had been closed for two years. Despite the stations being inactive, the receivers were still operational, and they kept a lookout for any Morse code signals. It was at that moment they realized the importance of repairing and maintaining K.P.H. as a tribute to the dedicated individuals who had worked for a century to uphold the reputation and expertise of radio telegraphers. Fortunately, they obtained permission from the National Park Service, as the Point Reyes station was located on their land.

Presently, in addition to K.P.H., other stations like KSM, KFS, and K6KPH have also resumed broadcasting. The commitment of the volunteers from M.R.H.S. allows for the annual commemoration of the men and women involved in wireless communication.
