Every year, on November 19, Women’s Entrepreneurship Day is celebrated to honor female entrepreneurs and acknowledge their impact on the entrepreneurial community. It is fascinating to note that the first female-owned company in the United States was established way back in 1739. Despite the progress made by women entrepreneurs since the Industrial Revolution, they still face obstacles such as gender biases, societal expectations, limited access to funding and mentorship, and inadequate education, which hinder their growth. The Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization, recognized by the United Nations and more than 120 countries, organizes this day. Additionally, on Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, deserving women in various industries are honored with WEDO Pioneer Awards for their pioneering work.

📜 Women Entrepreneurs Day History

Eliza Lucas Pinckney was a notable woman from South Carolina who defied societal expectations and rose to prominence in business. At the young age of 16, she took over her family’s plantations, becoming the first known American girl to run a company. During the same time period, there were other women who ventured into various businesses such as brothels, alehouses, taverns, and retail enterprises. However, these ventures were stigmatized due to cultural perceptions of what women should or should not do. It wasn’t until the 1900s when a progressive shift in society led to the acknowledgment of feminism as a movement, allowing women in business to be recognized as female entrepreneurs. In the early twentieth century, black women emerged as ambitious entrepreneurs in fields such as dressmaking, black hair care, domestic service, and midwifery. Madam C. J. Walker, the first African American female millionaire, stood out as one of the most successful women of her time. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, organizations like Count Me In and the Women’s Business Development Center were formed in the United States to provide education and financial support to female entrepreneurs. However, these efforts were not enough to bring women entrepreneurs on equal footing with their male counterparts. Since the year 2000, there has been an increase in support and attention for female entrepreneurs, resulting in greater funding opportunities for women-owned businesses. Wendy Diamond, inspired by her work with the Adelante Foundation in Honduras, established the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization (WEDO) in 2013 upon her return to the United States. This initiative has gained global recognition, with the first Women’s Entrepreneurship Day celebrated on November 19, 2014, in over 140 countries. It has been officially recognized in cities like New York City and Los Angeles, acknowledged by the United States House of Representatives, and commemorated by the United Nations.
