Stevenson completed his studies in literature and history at Princeton University in 1922. Although initially uninterested in law, he reluctantly pursued a law degree at Harvard Law School upon his father’s insistence. However, he quickly dropped out due to his lack of enthusiasm for the subject. It was not until he had a conversation with Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. that his passion for law was reignited. He eventually obtained his law degree from Northwestern University School of Law in 1926.

Stevenson was actively involved in the establishment of the United Nations and served as the US delegate to the UN Preparatory Commission. In 1949, he defeated the incumbent governor in the Chicago gubernatorial race, Dwight H. Green, and held the position of governor of the state from 1949 to 1953. Despite running for president twice, in 1952 and 1956, he was unsuccessful in both attempts. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed Stevenson as the US Ambassador to the United Nations, a role he held until his passing on July 14, 1965.
