Alamo Day is in:

Alamo Day is an annual event held on March 6 to commemorate the end of the Battle of the Alamo. This significant battle took place in 1836, exactly 13 days after intermittent fighting began. The Battle of the Alamo marked a crucial moment in the Texas Revolution. Tragically, when the Mexican forces regained control of the fort, the majority of Texan defenders, including the famous frontiersman Davy Crockett, lost their lives.

📜 Alamo Day History

During a two-week period, there was an exchange of gunfire between two opposing sides, resulting in only a few minor casualties. Despite being heavily outnumbered, commanders William Travis and James Bowie were determined to remain at their position. Various individuals, such as doctors, farmers, and Davy Crockett from the Tennessee militia, volunteered to help defend the Alamo.

On March 6, just before sunrise, the final attack took place. The Mexican soldiers breached the north wall and stormed the fortress, waking up many of the Texans inside. The battle lasted for about 90 minutes and involved intense hand-to-hand combat. Unfortunately, Bowie, Travis, and Crockett were all killed, although accounts differ on the circumstances and timing of their deaths. While some Texans claimed to have surrendered, Santa Anna ordered the execution of all captives. Only a few people, mostly women and children, survived. It is estimated that hundreds of Mexican soldiers died in the battle.

Mexican forces occupied the fort from March to May, but on April 21, Sam Houston and his men achieved victory over Santa Anna’s army at San Jacinto. During their charge, they shouted, “Remember the Alamo.” This triumph secured Texas’ independence. About a decade later, in 1845, Texas was annexed by the United States.

For many years, the US Army stationed troops and supplies at the Alamo. In 1883, the state of Texas purchased the Alamo and acquired the property rights to the surrounding area, totaling approximately four acres. The Alamo remains a powerful symbol of resilience and defiance. It attracts around 2.5 million tourists annually.
