The Army of Northern Virginia surrendered, marking the end of the war in Virginia. The preservation of Appomattox Court House’s history has been a priority since the nineteenth century, with the establishment of the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park. This park encompasses Lee’s headquarters, battlefield terrain, the Court House, and a reconstructed McLean House.
