📜 Barnum & Bailey Day History

The Barnum & Bailey Circus, later known as The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, was established in 1881 and gained immense popularity throughout its rich history. The circus, which proudly called itself the “Greatest Show on Earth,” operated for almost a century until 2017.

The origins of the modern circus can be traced back to Philip Astley, who founded it in England in the 1700s. Astley was the first to bring together various forms of entertainment, such as horseback riding stunts, acrobats, and clowns. The Royal Circus, which opened later in the same century, was the first to use the term “circus.”

In 1792, John Bill Ricketts introduced the circus to the United States, and a few decades later, Joshuah Purdy Brown invented the canvas tent, providing a portable venue for circuses. However, it was P. T. Barnum who truly revolutionized the circus industry by introducing the first-ever freak show.

After Barnum’s retirement, he joined forces with William Cameron Coup to create The P. T. Barnum’s Museum, Menagerie & Circus, which became known as the “Greatest Show on Earth.” This was the first circus to utilize trains for transportation. Later on, James Anthony Bailey convinced Barnum to merge their individual circus shows, resulting in Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. When both owners passed away, the circus was acquired by Ringling Bros. World’s Greatest Shows, and eventually became part of The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
