Despite being primarily self-taught, Banneker made significant contributions to science and became one of the first African Americans to achieve recognition in this field. His remarkable accomplishments and influential connections with important political figures during the time of the federal government greatly impacted how African Americans were perceived.
📜 Benjamin Banneker Week History
The talented mathematician acquired most of his skills through self-learning, often by borrowing books. He had a natural aptitude for mathematics from a young age and even constructed a precise wooden clock in his early twenties. George Ellicott, a Quaker and amateur astronomer, played a significant role in encouraging Banneker’s passion for astronomy, which led to him making astronomical calculations and accurately predicting a solar eclipse in 1789. Banneker’s involvement in surveying the area that would become Washington, D.C. also provided him with opportunities to make further astronomical observations. Additionally, he was a writer and activist who campaigned against slavery and fought for civil rights. Banneker corresponded with Thomas Jefferson in 1791, appealing for assistance in improving the conditions for African Americans. As Banneker grew older and unable to work on the farm, he sold it to the Ellicott family under the condition that he could live in the farmhouse until his death. During his final days, he dedicated his time to research and scientific experimentation. Unfortunately, during his burial, his farmhouse, laboratory, and beloved wooden clock were intentionally set on fire. Only one handwritten diary by Banneker survived, as it was not at the residence. All other records of his achievements, except for the published almanacs, were destroyed in this fire, most likely planned.
