In 1954, author Brian O’Nolan and artist John Ryan collaborated to organize the first official Bloomsday. They retraced the routes mentioned in Joyce’s “Ulysses” as a tribute to the day in Dublin. Accompanying them were Patrick Kavanagh, Tom Joyce (James Joyce’s brother), and their cousin. Anthony Cronin and A.J. Leventhal joined the journey as carriage drivers for the company.

Each participant embraced a role from the book, with A.J. Leventhal portraying Leopold Bloom, Brian O’Nolan as Simon Dedalus, John Ryan as Martin Cunningham, and Anthony Cronin as Stephen Dedalus.
