📜 Crayola Crayon Day History
Over time, simpler colors became more popular while more complex shades lost their popularity. Colors like celestial blue, golden ochre, rose pink, and burnt sienna were no longer produced after 1910. Purple and violet crayons were discontinued in 1914, and gold, silver, and copper colors were phased out in 1915.
In 1926, Binney & Smith bought the coloring process of the Munsell Color Company, which led to the rise in popularity of Crayola crayons. They introduced the concept of a color wheel in their crayons, featuring the five main hues of red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. In 1930, they added orange as a main color and created six intermediate hues. This eventually led to the redesign of the crayon box, now containing 12 colors. To further expand their range, they added black, neutral gray, white, and brown, creating a box of 16 different colors. However, Munsell Crayola boxes were discontinued in 1935 due to shortages during wartime. Nonetheless, the Munsell coloring scheme remained an important part of Crayola until 1990.
Today, Crayola offers around 120 different colors of crayons, all derived from the three primary colors.
