📜 D.B. Cooper Day History
In a subsequent message, the unidentified individual demanded $200,000 in $20 bills and two parachutes upon the plane’s arrival in Seattle. They also requested that the plane be refueled for a future departure. When the plane landed in Seattle, 36 people were taken off, and the demands were met. The individual convinced two pilots, a flight engineer, and a flight attendant to remain on the plane until it was refueled. They instructed them to fly the aircraft to Mexico City at a low altitude and speed. The individual then parachuted out of the plane mid-flight, supposedly over Ariel, Washington, and was never seen again.
This incident became a nationwide sensation, leading to an extensive investigation known as NORJAK (Northwest Hijacking). Over the course of five years, 800 suspects were questioned, but almost all were cleared of any involvement. Initially, the FBI suspected the hijacker had a military background, but this theory was discarded due to the reckless nature of D.B. Cooper’s escape plan. With little progress made over time, the investigation was eventually closed to allocate resources elsewhere. This remains the only unsolved case of air piracy for the FBI.
