During his time there, Father Damien not only fulfilled his religious duties but also worked alongside the locals to build a chapel, reservoir, houses, furniture, coffins, and graves. He cared for the lepers, appointed leaders to improve the community, and lived among them as equals.

After 11 years of selfless service, Father Damien contracted leprosy himself. However, he continued his work until March 23, 1889, when he became too ill to continue. Father Damien passed away on April 15, 1889, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and dedication to those suffering from leprosy.
