To repay his debts, Mark Twain, also known as Samuel Clemens, sought to find gold in the 1860s. While in Angels Camp, California, he came across a local bartender entertaining the townspeople with a humorous story about frog competitions. Although Twain didn’t strike gold, he discovered his true calling as a writer. In 1867, he released a book called “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” which not only elevated his fame but also brought attention to the little-known towns of Angels Camp and Calaveras Camp through the Gold Rush story and mythology.

In the 1920s, when a road in Angels Camp was repaired, locals inspired by Mark Twain decided to pay tribute to their community by organizing the first-ever annual frog jumping competition in the town. Due to its immense popularity, two years later they combined the event with the Country Fair and relocated it to the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp. Today, tens of thousands of people attend the four-day festival.
