📜 Girl Scout Leader Appreciation Day History

In late 1912, Juliette Low proposed combining the Camp Fire Girls and the Girl Guides, but the idea was rejected in January 1913 because the Camp Fire Girls were the larger group at that time. After this failed attempt, Low tried to bring the group together with the Girl Scouts of America, which was founded by Clara Lisetor-Lane in Des Moines, Iowa. Low believed that the two organizations had similarities that would make the merger easier. However, Lisetor-Lane accused Low of copying her organization and threatened legal action. Eventually, Lisetor-Lane’s group disbanded due to financial difficulties. The Girl Guides of America changed their name to the Girl Scouts of the United States and moved their headquarters to Washington, D.C. in 1913. On March 16, 1947, the organization adopted its current name, Girl Scouts of the United States of America (G.S.U.S.A.). Today, Girl Scouts has over 50 million American women who have participated, and G.S.U.S.A. represents more than 10 million members in 146 countries as part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
