November is a special month in the United States called National American Indian Heritage Month, also known as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. It is a time to recognize and honor the Native American people who have endured many challenges throughout history while staying connected to their cultural traditions. This month is dedicated to celebrating their unique experiences, rich culture, and remarkable achievements in America. The main objective is to educate the wider population about these important aspects of Native American heritage. Originally, it started as a single day of celebration but has since expanded to an entire month devoted to this wonderful cause.

📜 Indian Heritage Month History

For over a hundred years, Native Americans and other Americans have been pushing for a special event to honor and remember the sacrifices and heritage of the original inhabitants of the United States. This movement gained momentum in the 20th century, with Dr. Arthur Parker, a Seneca Indian and director of the Museum of Arts and Science in New York, being one of the early champions. He advocated for the creation of “First Americans’ Day,” which the Boy Scouts observed from 1912 to 1915.

In 1914, Reverend Red Fox James, another supporter of Native American rights, traveled to Washington, D.C., to appeal for the establishment of “Indian Day.” He repeated this effort the following year, gathering support from 24 governors from different states. The American Indian Association’s annual Congress also endorsed the idea of commemorating American Indian Day that year, and an official proclamation was issued. The first official recognition of American Indians was scheduled to take place every year on the second Saturday of May.

Dr. Parker’s campaign for Native American citizenship achieved success in 1924, when the U.S. Congress approved a treaty granting Native Americans this status. This legislation was later expanded to include Alaska Natives.

In the late 20th century, American presidents issued official proclamations celebrating Native Americans with a special day, week, and eventually, a month. Each year, legislation and/or a presidential proclamation make the month-long celebration in November officially recognized.

🔖 Their first (known) autobiography
Sarah Winnemucca’s “Life Among the Paiutes: Their Wrongs and Claims,” published in 1883, is considered by many to be the first autobiography written by a Native American woman.

🔖 Information was limited
There was a misconception among outsiders that Native Americans and Alaska Natives were responsible for the destruction of burial mounds. However, in the 1890s, archaeologists discovered evidence that disproved this belief, revealing that the majority of burial and temple mounds were actually created by indigenous communities.
