📜 International Cheetah Day History

After a successful experiment, she and Khayam returned to the United States. However, while in Namibia, Dr. Marker noticed that cattle owners posed a threat to the wild cheetah population. These owners were actively eliminating cheetahs because they saw them as a danger to their livestock. To bridge the gap between Namibian farmers and cheetahs, Dr. Marker established the Cheetah Conservation Fund in 1991. She interacted with the locals and educated them on the importance of conserving animals. In honor of Khayam, Dr. Marker designated his birthday as the day to promote cheetah conservation. Since 2010, International Cheetah Day has been observed on December 4 worldwide to raise awareness about the threat of extinction faced by cheetahs. Unfortunately, the number of cheetahs in the wild has drastically decreased by 50% over the past four decades due to excessive hunting for their fur and the destruction of their habitats caused by human settlements. Today, let’s commemorate and protect cheetahs.
