International Dark Sky Week is in:

International Dark Sky Week is an annual event held during the week of the new moon in April. This year, it will be observed from April 17 to 23. During this week, people are encouraged to turn off their lights at night and take the time to admire the awe-inspiring beauty of the night sky. Unfortunately, due to light pollution, our view of the stars is often limited. Jennifer Barlow, from Midlothian, Virginia, started this week in 2003 because she was disappointed by the lack of visibility of the magnificent night sky.

📜 International Dark Sky Week History

Several decades ago, people were able to observe a faint ring of white light stretching across the night sky. This luminous band was none other than the visible part of our own Milky Way galaxy when observed from Earth. Within this galaxy, countless stars exist, although most are too distant for our eyes to distinguish as individual points of light. Instead, we perceive them as a collective white glow that covers the entire expanse of the sky. Unfortunately, the majority of us are unable to witness the beauty of the Milky Way due to the effects of light pollution. Those living in urban areas can only see an orange-hued sky at night, caused by the scattering of light from various man-made sources in the atmosphere. The presence of pollution from vehicles and factories exacerbates this situation, further obstructing the view for stargazers. However, in remote regions of the world where light pollution is less severe, one can still experience the breathtaking panorama of the night sky.

In 2003, Jennifer Barlow established a week dedicated to appreciating the magnificence of the night sky. She believed that by simply turning off our lights, we could reduce light pollution and enjoy a clearer view of the starry heavens. Recognizing the importance of her initiative, the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, the Astronomical League, and Sky & Telescope all lent their support to International Dark-Sky Day. Over time, this event has gained popularity and is now celebrated worldwide during the darkest week of April, coinciding with the new moon phase.
