📜 International Men’s Day History

In the early 1990s, Thomas Oaster, who was in charge of the Missouri Center for Men’s Studies, requested organizations in the United States, Australia, and Malta to hold small-scale activities for International Men’s Day in February. Oaster successfully organized similar events for two years, but the attendance for his 1995 effort was disappointing. Disheartened, he decided not to continue with the event. Australia followed suit and stopped celebrating, leaving Malta as the only country still observing International Men’s Day.

However, in 1999, Jerome Teelucksingh from the University of the West Indies revived the day in Trinidad and Tobago. Teelucksingh realized that while there was a day to honor fathers, there was no day to recognize men who did not have children or who were young boys or teenagers. He understood the importance of positive male role models, as his own father had been an excellent example for him. Teelucksingh chose November 19, which was both his father’s birthday and the day when a local soccer team had brought unity to his country in their efforts to qualify for the World Cup.

Since Teelucksingh’s revival, International Men’s Day has been used to promote positive aspects of male identity, aiming to show that men respond better to good role models rather than negative gender stereotypes. The purpose of the day is not to compete with International Women’s Day, but to highlight the importance of men’s physical and mental health, as well as positive masculinity.
