M.P.S. encompasses more than 40 inherited disorders that are caused by dysfunction in the lysosome organelle.

📜 International MPS Awareness Day History

M.P.S., or mucopolysaccharidoses, is a condition that can manifest in various ways and affects approximately one in every 25,000 newborns. The discovery and classification of different types of M.P.S. began in the early 20th century, with Dr. Charles Hunter identifying M.P.S. Type II in 1917 and Gertrud Hurler discovering the Hurler and Hunter syndromes in 1919. Initially, these illnesses were thought to be identical, with Hunter disease considered a milder form of Hurler syndrome. However, in 1978, they were classified as distinct conditions by Lorincz. It wasn’t until 1968 that inadequate breakdown of mucopolysaccharides was identified as the cause of these illnesses.

Today, there are seven main clinical categories of M.P.S. with numerous subgroups. Although each case is unique, most patients experience a period of normal development followed by a decline in physical or mental function. Depending on the specific type of M.P.S., individuals may experience cognitive deficiencies, developmental delays, or severe behavioral problems. Many also suffer from hearing loss, neurosensory impairment, or both. As there is no known cure for M.P.S., the focus of treatment is on improving the patient’s quality of life.
