Unfortunately, Smith was severely injured in an explosion in 1609 and had to return to England. The colony faced a harsh winter without his guidance, and only 60 out of the original 500 settlers remained in Jamestown when relief finally arrived. The situation seemed dire until John Rolfe introduced new tobacco seedlings from Bermuda in 1614. The tobacco became a huge success in London, leading to a surge in demand. Rolfe, who had become wealthy, married Pocahontas, who had been kidnapped and converted to Christianity. She adopted the name Rebecca. This marriage brought years of peace between the English and the Powhatan tribes. Tobacco became popular across Europe, and Jamestown began to thrive by 1619. That year, the General Assembly, which was the first representative assembly in America, met at the Jamestown Church to establish a unified government and just laws for the people of Virginia.
