The first clash of the American Revolutionary War took place on April 19, 1775, when British General Thomas Gage ordered the confiscation of weapons in Concord, Massachusetts. Captain Parker, leader of a group of around 70 volunteer militiamen, learned of the British approach from Paul Revere and William Dawes. Parker instructed his soldiers not to fire unless the British did so first. Major Pitcairn and his British soldiers arrived in Lexington and engaged in a battle with Parker’s forces, resulting in significant British casualties. This lesser-known conflict, referred to as “Parker’s Revenge,” occurred before the more famous initial battle of the day. The British suffered 300 casualties, while fewer than 100 Patriots were killed. Unfortunately, Captain Parker, who had tuberculosis, did not live to witness the independence he fought for, as he died from his illness on September 17, 1775.
