Every year on May 28, we celebrate Julia Pierpont Day to honor Julia Augusta Robertson Pierpont. She played a significant role in the establishment of “Decoration Day,” which eventually became known as “Memorial Day” and is observed on May 30. Memorial Day is a special day to remember and honor all the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States military. Julia Pierpont, the wife of Francis Pierpont, who served as the governor of West Virginia, started this tradition in 1865 after the Civil War. She noticed that the soldiers’ graves appeared neglected, so both she and her husband took the initiative to decorate and honor the graves of these fallen soldiers. In 2005, West Virginia officially declared it a holiday.

📜 Julia Pierpont Day History

During the Civil War, the Pierpont family supported Abraham Lincoln and the Union Army. Unfortunately, they found themselves in enemy territory in Richmond, Virginia. Their situation became even more challenging when their library was set on fire by former supporters. Living in enemy territory brought many disruptions and difficulties. The Governor’s decision to grant amnesty to Confederate soldiers who had served in the war caused tension between him and the Unionists.

In the midst of these challenging circumstances, Julia noticed that the graves of fallen soldiers were neglected and in poor condition. In 1866, while teaching at African American schools, Julia and her friend Miss Woolsey took it upon themselves to beautify the soldiers’ graves in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, West Virginia. They enlisted the help of their students and other children in the community to clean up the cemetery and place flowers on the graves. Despite the arduous task of building a fence to enclose the new Union cemetery, they completed the project in just 10 days. On May 1, 1865, a crowd of around 10,000 people, mostly black locals, gathered at the cemetery to listen to sermons and sing in honor of the fallen soldiers.

Julia’s actions received both praise and criticism. Later on, May 30 was observed as “Decoration Day” where thousands of people came to Richmond to decorate Confederate graves. Eventually, Congress declared Memorial Day or Decoration Day as a federal holiday, expanding the recognition to include all military personnel who died while on duty during World War I. In 1987, Julia Pierpont was officially recognized as the initiator of the annual “Memorial Day” celebrations by the West Virginia University Public History Program, in collaboration with the Center for Women’s Studies and the Historic Preservation Unit.
