📜 Kent State Shootings Remembrance History

Meanwhile, students at Kent State University in Ohio were getting ready to join the anti-war movement. On May 1, angry and intoxicated students set fire to garbage cans and vandalized business windows. Campus police managed to restore order by the next day. However, the mayor of Kent, Leroy Satrom, declared a state of emergency and sought assistance from Governor James A. Rhodes. Rhodes, a staunch conservative, deployed the Ohio National Guard to prevent any radical activities.

Despite efforts to calm the situation, rumors of radical activity persisted at Kent State. The presence of the National Guard only served to further agitate the demonstrators. By May 3, more than 1,200 National Guardsmen had arrived on campus. When the protests turned violent, the guardsmen resorted to reading the Riot Act and using bayonets and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Although unofficial, martial law was declared and campus demonstrations were prohibited. However, many students either remained unaware of these restrictions or chose to defy them.

On May 4, classes resumed at Kent State University. On that same day, a gathering of over 3,000 students took place in the Commons grassy area to protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the National Guard. Armed with Garand M-1 rifles and live ammunition, the National Guard charged into the crowd. They opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four students and injuries to nine others.

This tragic event sparked nationwide anger and outrage. In the weeks that followed, hundreds of college campuses across the country organized strikes, marches, and rallies in protest of the war. The shootings at Kent State University ignited a wave of anti-war demonstrations that surpassed even the student movement that influenced Lyndon B. Johnson’s decision not to seek re-election.
