He was captured and held captive by Native Americans for a staggering 18 years. Fontaneda chronicled his extraordinary journey in his memoirs, which included a remarkable account of a unique animal known as the key deer. This would later be recognized as one of the earliest mentions of this species in history. According to Fontaneda’s memoirs, the Keys were teeming with key deer at the time, and both Native Americans and passing travelers would consume them as a food source.

Sadly, the key deer population faced severe threats due to unregulated hunting, pushing them close to the brink of extinction. By the 1940s, there were only 50 key deer remaining worldwide. Thankfully, government authorities and the local community took action to protect this species. In 1957, the National Key Deer Refuge was established, and a series of conservation measures were enacted. Those who illegally hunted key deer faced strict prosecution, and barriers were constructed along roadways to prevent the animals from straying onto busy streets. Speed restrictions were also imposed to prevent accidents involving these precious creatures. As a result of these efforts, the key deer population rebounded, and today, approximately 1,000 key deer can be found exclusively in Big Pine Key and No Name Keys, their last remaining habitats.
