Loomis Day is observed on May 30 annually to pay tribute to Mahlon Loomis and his significant contributions to telegraphic communication. Loomis, an American dentist, was fascinated by the Earth’s atmosphere and its potential for long-distance wireless communication. Although many of his endeavors failed or were disregarded, one of his notable experiments led to the accidental discovery of basic radio technology. This wireless technology was later developed and expanded to provide us with modern amenities like WiFi, TV, radio, telephones, and more. Despite being unintentional, Mahlon Loomis is credited with the wireless telegraphic technology that we all benefit from today.

📜 Loomis Day History

In October 1866, Loomis conducted experiments in the Virginia Highlands to prove his theories. He believed that by tapping into each layer of the atmosphere separately, it would be possible to establish wireless communication. To test this, he connected two kites with copper wire and flew them on two mountains, 20 miles apart. He attached a galvanometer to each copper thread, which helped measure electric current. Surprisingly, Loomis found that by moving one kite, the other would also move. Although he thought he had created a closed circuit, he had actually achieved an early form of radio transmission. In 1872, he received a patent for his invention titled “An Improvement in Telegraphing.” Other researchers and academics continued to build upon Loomis’ discoveries, leading to the development of technologies like WiFi, TV, walkie-talkies, and internet-connected home devices that we use today thanks to wireless telegraphy.
