During the years between 1876 and 1938, a high percentage of miners, ranging from 60% to 80%, succumbed to the disease, resulting in mines being referred to as “death pits.”

Initially, lung cancer remained relatively rare, accounting for only 1% of all cancer cases by 1878. Unfortunately, this percentage increased significantly to 10% in 1918 and over 14% in 1927. This rise can be attributed to the fact that although smoking rates were escalating, the detrimental effects on health were yet to be discovered. In 1929, German physician Fritz Lickint was the first to observe and emphasize the connection between smoking and lung cancer. This revelation prompted an anti-tobacco movement in Nazi Germany, which later spread to other parts of the world experiencing an increase in lung cancer cases. By the 1930s, the disease had seen an “unusual” surge, leading experts to investigate the role of smoking in causing lung cancer. A case-control study published in 1940 in Germany concluded that the significant rise in tobacco usage was the primary cause of the increasing lung cancer rates.
