Johnson, was an American educator and politician who served as the 36th President from 1963 to 1969, after serving as the 37th Vice President. After his passing in 1973, the Texas State Legislature designated a legal state holiday in his name as a tribute to the 36th President, who was a proud native of Texas.

In 1937, he was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1960, he tried to become the Democratic nominee for president but was unsuccessful. Instead, John F. Kennedy from Massachusetts won the election and chose him as his running mate. They won the election and he became Vice President on January 20, 1961. After Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, he became the President. In 1964, he campaigned for a full term and easily won against Republican Senator Barry. With 61% of the vote, he became the President. He promised to create a “great society” for Americans. In 1968, he chose not to run for re-election when Senator Eugene McCarthy announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination. He later stated on television that he would not seek or accept his party’s nomination. He passed away from a heart attack at his Texas ranch on January 22, 1973. In his honor, August 27 was declared an official state holiday by the Texas State Legislature.
