📜 Maryland Day History
On November 22, 1634, the ships departed from Cowes in the Isle of Wight, England. However, a storm struck a few days later, causing the ships to be separated. The Ark found itself in the Fortunate Islands (now known as the Canary Islands) before continuing its journey across the Atlantic to Barbados in the West Indies on January 3. After three weeks, the Dove reconnected with them, and together they sailed north to Virginia, arriving on February 27. They then gathered supplies and made their way to Chesapeake Bay, eventually reaching the Potomac River and moving towards Maryland’s shores.
Upon arrival, the locals were not pleased with their presence. Leonard Calvert, a member of the expedition, traveled to Piscataway and negotiated a truce with the Conoy Indian Chief. After returning down the Potomac, on March 25, English settlers rowed to an island that would later be named St. Clements and celebrated their accomplishments with a feast.
In 1903, the Maryland State Board of Education marked March 25 as Maryland Day to honor the state’s history. The General Assembly officially declared it a legal holiday in 1916.
