π Mickey Mouse Day History
Disney had to start from the beginning with only himself and two dedicated animators, Ub Iwerks and Les Clark. This experience taught him the importance of securing the rights to characters created by his company. While working at Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri, Disney was inspired by a pet mouse at his desk and initially named the character Mortimer Mouse. However, his wife, Lillian, convinced him to change it to Mickey Mouse.
On May 14, 1928, Mickey was featured in a test screening of the cartoon short “Plane Crazy,” but it did not impress viewers or attract distributors. Undeterred, Disney created another Mickey short called “The Gallopin’ Gaucho,” but it also failed to find a distributor. Finally, Disney and Iwerks co-directed “Steamboat Willy,” which premiered in New York on November 18, 1928. This was the third Mickey film created and the first to be picked up by a distributor, marking Mickey’s debut. The cartoon was intended as a playful parody of Buster Keaton’s “Steamboat Bill, Jr.”

It’s only fitting that we commemorate his birthday!
Consider how unlikely it is for a cartoon mouse to become famous. He’s been a sailor, a musketeer and a mouseketeer, a prince and a peasant, a wizard, and a variety of other roles. And it’s all because of the humans’ imaginations that put him there. Thank you for your wonderful vision, Walt Disney!
