Despite Mudd’s knowledge of the crime, he did not report Booth’s visit to the authorities until the following day. 📜 Mudd Day History
He was a doctor and tobacco grower in Southern Maryland, but his company suffered greatly during the Civil War and after Maryland abolished slavery. During this time, he met Booth, who had plans to kidnap Lincoln, and Mudd was often seen with three of the conspirators. However, it is still unclear what role, if any, Mudd played in the story.
Mudd is well-known for providing shelter to Booth at his home after Lincoln’s assassination, which led to suspicions that he was involved in the assassination plot. On April 14, 1865, Booth killed Lincoln at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. During his escape, Booth fractured his leg and met up with Herold. They rode on horseback to Mudd’s house, which was located about five miles north of Bryantown, Maryland.
Mudd helped splint Booth’s leg when they arrived at his house and allowed them to stay overnight. The next morning, Mudd borrowed crutches from a nearby carpenter for Booth to use while he recovered from his injuries. After shaving his mustache, Booth left Mudd’s residence in the late afternoon, having spent at least twelve hours there.
Two weeks later, Union cavalry found Booth and Herold hiding in a tobacco hut in Virginia. Herold surrendered, but Booth resisted and took refuge in a burning shed. He was eventually forced out and shot dead. For many years, there has been ongoing debate about Mudd’s actions and his possible role in the crime.
