NAACP Day is in:

Every year on February 12, NAACP Day is celebrated to honor the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The NAACP is a civil rights organization that was founded in 1909 with the goal of fighting for justice for the black American community. In the present day, the NAACP strives to ensure equal rights for all individuals regardless of their race, through various means such as lobbying, public relations campaigns, and legal action. Over time, the NAACP has expanded its focus to address issues impacting African-Americans, including police misconduct, immigration concerns, and economic development. The organization continues to use its original name, which refers to individuals of African heritage using the term “colored people.”

📜 NAACP Day History

The NAACP was established partly in response to the 1908 Springfield race riot in Illinois. This riot occurred when two black men accused of crimes against white individuals were secretly moved to another city’s jail. In retaliation, a white mob destroyed numerous homes in the black residential area, damaged local businesses, and ultimately killed two African Americans. Some of the early members of the NAACP were individuals who had been involved in the Niagara Movement, led by W.E.B. Du Bois. These members aimed to expand voting rights, particularly for women, and included social workers, journalists, and labor reformers.

The NAACP made a commitment in its charter to advocate for equal rights and the end of racial discrimination. They also sought to advance the interests of colored individuals in areas such as voting rights, legal justice, education, and job opportunities. The organization pursued these goals through legal action, lobbying, and nonviolent protests. In 1910, Oklahoma approved a constitutional amendment that allowed individuals whose grandfathers were qualified to vote in 1866 to register without passing a literacy test. While this favored illiterate white voters, it discriminated against illiterate black voters, who did not have guaranteed voting rights in 1866, by requiring them to pass a test. The NAACP challenged this statute, leading to a significant legal victory in 1915 when the US Supreme Court ruled against the legitimacy of the “grandfather clause” in the case of “Guinn v. United States.”

Today, the NAACP focuses on various issues including employment inequality, education, healthcare, and the criminal justice system. They also advocate for the protection of voting rights for colored individuals and have campaigned for the removal of Confederate flags and statues from public spaces.
