📜 National Atomic Veterans Day History

The United States Army conducted the first ever nuclear bomb detonation on July 16, 1945, known as “Trinity,” in the Jornada del Muerto desert, New Mexico. Atomic veterans, who were involved in approximately 235 nuclear bomb tests between 1945 and 1962, served in or near Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or were imprisoned there during the war. Many of these veterans experienced serious health problems due to radiation exposure. They were unable to seek medical care or disability benefits from the US Department of Veterans Affairs as they had taken an oath of secrecy. However, in 1966, the US Congress repealed the Nuclear Radiation and Secrecy Agreements Act, allowing atomic veterans to share their experiences openly and apply for compensation from the VA. These veterans are now eligible for free healthcare and financial assistance, including disability allowances that may extend to their surviving spouse or children. To support atomic veterans in receiving medical treatment, the National Association of Atomic Veterans was established in 1979. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation by U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger, which included a provision to honor atomic warriors, into law as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022.
