📜 National Carolina Day History

In 1814, Caroline went to Italy where she hired Bartolomeo Pergami as a servant. They quickly became close friends. However, in 1817, Caroline received devastating news of her daughter’s death during childbirth. In 1820, when George ascended the throne as King of the United Kingdom and Hanover, he demanded that Caroline divorce him. However, she refused to comply.

Caroline was well-liked by the British public, who sympathized with her and disliked George. He sought a divorce from Caroline and presented questionable evidence to Parliament through the Pains and Penalties Bill in 1820. However, due to George’s unpopularity and public support for Caroline, the bill was dropped by the Liverpool cabinet.

Despite her popularity, Caroline was denied access to George’s coronation in 1821. Later that year, she fell ill in London and passed away three weeks later. Her funeral procession traveled through the city before reaching Braunschweig, where she was laid to rest.
