This idea was put forward by Polly Keener and Ken Alvine, who were part of the National Cartoonists Day Committee and mentioned in news articles. The inspiration for this special day came from the first color newspaper cartoon called “Hogan’s Alley”, which was published on May 5, 1895. The cartoon, created by Richard Outcault, featured a mischievous child with big ears and no shoes, later known as “The Yellow Kid”. This cartoon gained immense popularity and became the first successful commercial animation. The term “The Yellow Kid” is said to have influenced the phrase “yellow journalism”, although there is limited evidence to support this claim. Cartoons became a prominent feature in newspapers after the “The Yellow Kid” series ended in 1898, leading to an increased demand for skilled cartoonists and illustrators.
