📜 National Cat Lovers’ Month History
In recent years, the remains of a cat and a human were found buried together in southern Cyprus. Some publications suggested that this discovery hinted at the domestication of cats in that area, while others argued that cats may have chosen to live alongside humans by themselves. They provided evidence that the cat’s genetic makeup was similar to that of African wildcats at the time.
Fossil evidence from China, dating back around 5,300 years, shows that cats of similar size to today’s domestic cats used to hunt small grain-eating mammals like mice. Cats in agricultural settings, however, preferred millet.
Ancient Egypt is also believed to have seen the domestication of cats due to the Egyptians’ strong affection for them and their social and religious significance. Although cats were considered sacred animals in Egypt between 2465 and 2150 B.C., they were not fully tamed yet. The ancient Egyptians may have kept cats because they were effective in keeping rats away from their stables. Their admiration and reverence for these magnificent predators led to the establishment of religious cat cults and temples where cats were worshipped.
However, there are no reliable records of domestication before 1500 B.C.
