Initially named Scotch Cellulose Tape, it later became known as Scotch Transparent Tape. The tape earned the nickname “Scotch” when a body shop painter, frustrated with its adhesive, exclaimed, “Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!” On January 31, 1930, cellophane tape was introduced to the public and quickly gained popularity. It was granted a patent on May 27 of the same year, leading to the establishment of National Cellophane Tape Day.
