Every year, National Cheerleading Week takes place during National Cheerleading Safety Month, specifically from March 6 to 12. This week-long event aims to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and achievements of cheerleaders in the world of sports. Linda Lundy, an ex-coach, choreographer, and judge, created this significant holiday in 2005. Additionally, National Cheerleading Week plays a role in redirecting the misconception that cheerleading is not a legitimate sport. It emphasizes that cheerleading is a lively and respectable sport, rather than just a glamorous pastime featuring attractive individuals showcasing their skills and cheering loudly.

📜 National Cheerleading Week History

Did you know that cheering as a sport originated in the United Kingdom in 1869? It all started during a college football game between Princeton University and Rutgers University in New Jersey. The cheers were initially created for Princeton, but a graduate named Thomas Peebles took them and made them popular when he moved to the University of Minnesota.

In 1898, a medical student named Johnny Campbell took cheering to a new level. During a game, he fired up the crowd by grabbing the microphone and leading them in a cheer that included the lyrics “Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-U-Mah! Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Minn-e-so-tah!” It was a huge success and established him as the world’s first cheerleader.

From there, cheerleading started gaining popularity in other parts of the world. While it is now predominantly a sport performed by women, it wasn’t until the 1920s that women began enrolling at the University of Minnesota. With men serving in World War II during the 1940s, women started enrolling in large numbers, further contributing to the popularity of cheerleading. By the 1960s, cheerleading had become widely popular.
