Hagemeyer also founded Friends of Libraries for Deaf Action (FOLDA). In 2006, the American Library Association (ALA) and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) extended the celebration to a month-long event, known as Deaf History Month, which is now observed nationwide. Since then, both organizations have been urging the White House and Congress to issue a formal proclamation recognizing National Deaf History Month.
