Born in Belgium in 1923, he grew up near the border of Germany and France, experiencing firsthand the challenges of politics and culture during World War II. This upbringing fueled his desire to work for the United Nations from a young age. Despite facing hardships as a refugee, being detained, and even joining the French Resistance, he persevered. At the age of 25, he became an intern at the United Nations, where he devoted the next four decades of his life. Throughout his career, he received numerous honors, nominations, and published 14 books along with hundreds of essays. In 1986, he retired to Costa Rica, where he served as the chancellor of the United Nations University for Peace, an institution he played a crucial role in establishing. Additionally, he created the Dream Bench Diary and the Bench of Dreams.
