📜 National Fluffernutter Day History

After World War I, Archie partnered with two candlemakers in 1920 and renamed their original recipe to “Toot Sweet Marshmallow Fluff.” In May of that year, Archie sold his recipe to H. Allen Durkee and Fred L. Mower for $500, and they decided to call it Marshmallow Fluff.

In the following years, sales of Marshmallow Fluff skyrocketed under the Durkee-Mower, Inc. brand. To promote their popular confection, the company sponsored a radio program called “The Flufferettes” in 1930. As the demand for Fluff grew, they published a booklet called “The Yummy Book” in 1940, featuring Fluff recipes.

In the 1960s, Durkee-Mower, Inc. registered the name “Fluffernutter,” which is the most famous dish made with Marshmallow Fluff. This iconic combination of peanut butter and Fluff became beloved in New England.

In 2006, the Fluffernutter had a significant year. There was a proposal in the Massachusetts state legislature to make it the official state sandwich, although it was ultimately defeated. However, Brigham’s Ice Cream introduced a Fluffernutter flavor that same year, which was a success. Additionally, the first Marshmallow Fluff Festival took place that summer.

👍 Why Is National Fluffernutter Day Important

We have fond memories of opening our school lunchbox to find a gooey, sweet Fluffernutter sandwiched between (gasp!) white Wonder Bread. Talk about a good deal! If you were willing to trade, you could get at least two baked chocolate chip cookies and a bag of potato chips for one Fluffernutter.

If you didn’t get to try a Fluffernutter as a kid, today’s the day to find out what all the fuss was about. Purchase a jar of marshmallow fluff and experiment with it. You could discover your new favorite comfort meal.

Just thinking about Fluffernutter surviving wars, recessions, depressions, and government eating healthy rules makes us happy. It’s reassuring to know that certain things never change.
