National Iowa Day is celebrated annually on February 8th to honor the state of Iowa. Known as the Hawkeye State, Iowa is renowned for its vast plains, picturesque hills, talented residents, and its ability to create captivating scenes in movies. From the stunning Mississippi River to the flourishing harvests in Plymouth, Harrison, and Fremont counties, Iowa has contributed significantly to the history, natural beauty, and warm hospitality of the United States. The state derives its name from the Iowa Native Americans, who established themselves in the region after Eastern tribes were forced to relocate due to European settlement. Although the Iowa Territory was purchased as part of the Louisiana Purchase, it wasn’t settled until the 1830s.

📜 National Iowa Day History

The present state of Iowa was created from land obtained from France in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. After acquiring Eastern Iowa from the Fox and Sauk in the 1830s, settlers quickly arrived. Iowa Territory was established in 1838 with a population of 23,242 and became a part of the United States in 1846. In the 1850s, Iowa’s population grew rapidly, and in 1857, the Spirit Lake Massacre occurred, which was one of the last instances of Native American hostility towards the state.

During the years leading up to the American Civil War, Iowa experienced lawlessness, vigilantism, and lynchings as it struggled to establish a stable society. The state had a significant presence on both sides of the conflict, and it became known for its support of the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape from the South to Canada. Iowa also contributed more soldiers to the Civil War than any other state. Although there were no actual battles fought in Iowa, a Confederate guerilla invasion from Missouri occurred in 1864. Today, Iowa is renowned for its fertile farmland and beautiful landscapes.
