📜 National Krewe of Tucks Day History
The Krewe of Tucks was formed when Loyola University students requested a permit for a procession in 1969. They were inspired by a bar called Friar Tuck’s and wanted to start their own krewe after being unsuccessful in carrying white flambeaux. Originally used to light up New Orleans parades at night, the flambeau became a symbol of the procession. Despite the bar where it all began no longer being in operation, the Tucks Parade continues to this day. It started as a small pickup truck parade in the evening but later became a daylight procession and joined the traditional Uptown to Downtown route. Despite its growth, the krewe has maintained its sense of humor and notoriety, with satirical floats like the King’s Throne, a giant toilet, being a well-known feature. Previous kings have included comedic stars like John Candy and Eugene Levy.
