Each October, the United States observes National L.G.B.T. History Month, dedicated to commemorating and acknowledging the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. This special month-long celebration was established in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a teacher at Mehlville High School in Missouri, as a way to honor and recognize the contributions and experiences of the L.G.B.T. community.

📜 National LGBT History Month History

Students in Wilson’s class recently watched a film about World War II and the tragic events of the Holocaust. Afterward, Wilson showed them a graphic displaying the patches that Jewish people were forced to wear during that time. He made a bold statement, saying that if he had lived during that era, he would have worn a similar patch because he is gay.

This comment sparked controversy, with concerned parents worrying that their children might be influenced negatively. However, despite the backlash, Wilson was not fired from his teaching position. In fact, he received tenure the following year and continued to teach in the district for three more years.

Following his time as a regular classroom teacher, Rodney Wilson moved on to teach G.E.D. programs for inmates in Massachusetts. Eventually, he returned to Missouri and remained active in National L.G.B.T. History Month events. He continues to participate in virtual activities for the holiday he helped create.

In 2006, the Equality Forum took charge of promoting the event and preparing materials for it.
