📜 National Peace Rose Day History

Before the German invasion of France, Meilland took precautions to protect the unique bloom of the rose by sending cuttings to friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States. Each country gave the rose a different name. In France, it is still called “Madame A. Meilland” after the breeder’s mother. In Italy, it is called “Gioia,” meaning “joy.” In Germany, it is known as “Gloria Dei,” meaning “glory to God.” In the United States, it is called the Peace Rose.

In the US, the rose was given its American name in 1945 by Robert Pyle of the Conard Pyle Company. While Europe was at war, Pyle took care of the rose and submitted samples to the American Rose Society for evaluation. After Germany left France, Pyle assured Meilland that the rose would be introduced to the American public after the war. Pyle named the rose “Peace” to honor the expected global peace. To celebrate Germany’s surrender, these roses were given to each participant at the first United Nations conference in 1945.

Since then, National Peace Rose Day has been observed to commemorate the day when this rose acquired its American name and the significance it holds.
