📜 National Play-Doh Day History

In 1933, Cleo McVicker and his brother Noah invented a safe and malleable formula for cleaning wallpaper for Kutol Products in Cincinnati, Ohio. However, the demand for this product declined after World War II when oil and gas-powered heaters became popular in homes. Despite this, Cleo’s son Joseph took over the company and worked hard to keep it afloat.

In 1955, Kay Zufall, a schoolteacher and Cleo’s sister-in-law, suggested a new idea for the product. She noticed that her children had used the clay-like substance to create art and convinced Cleo to market it as an arts and crafts material and toy. Cleo started selling the product, now called Play-Doh, through a different division of Kutol Products called Rainbow Crafts Company Inc.

The real breakthrough for Play-Doh came when it was featured on the popular children’s television show hosted by Bob Keeshan, known as Captain Kangaroo. This exposure led to a massive increase in sales and made Play-Doh a household name. Hasbro eventually acquired the product and continues to market it to this day. What started as a simple wallpaper cleaner has since evolved into a range of colors and accessories, thanks to the success of Play-Doh.
