While working as a cop, she started blogging and later became a freelance writer in 2004. Her blog, “Cong Ly va Su That,” meaning “Justice and Truth,” focused on exposing police abuses. This led to her dismissal from the Communist Party and eventually being fired due to her outspoken criticism. In 2011, she was detained on charges of spreading anti-state propaganda.
Tragically, her mother, Dang Thi Kim Lieng, set herself on fire in front of a government building in protest of the allegations against her daughter. Ta Phong Tan was sentenced to ten years in prison, a decision that drew condemnation from various organizations such as the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the United States State Department, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch. After serving three years, she was eventually released and sought refuge in the United States.
