📜 National Teacher Appreciation Day History

Before Roosevelt intervened, some states had already been observing a day to honor teachers. The idea for this special day is believed to have come from a teacher named Mattye Whyte, who wrote to various school officials and eventually reached out to Roosevelt himself, seeking his support for teachers. Roosevelt championed the cause in Congress, but it took another 27 years for National Teacher Appreciation Day to become a national holiday.

In 1980, the Nationwide Education Association (N.E.A.) collaborated with the Indiana and Kansas State Boards of Education to petition Congress for a national day to recognize teachers. The first National Teacher Appreciation Day was observed on March 7, 1980. However, in 1984, the event was moved to May, thanks to the National Parent Teacher Association. They decided that rather than just one day, teachers should be recognized for an entire week, thus giving birth to the first Teacher Appreciation Week in America. In 1985, the National Education Association followed suit and also changed National Teacher Appreciation Day to the Tuesday of the first full week in May.
